The Spofforth Castle was originally an equipped manor house dating back to 11th century. In the early 13th century it was founded by William de Percy. The castle which is currently located as a famous tourist attraction was built by the Percy family in the early 13th century. Few alterations were made to this in the 14th and 15th centuries. Spofforth Castle is located in the village centre which is 6 miles south-east of Harrogate. In 1408, the Percy estates were impounded after insurgence against Henry IV. Spofforth was in turn returned to the family and inhabited until 1604. During the Civil War the Spofforth Castle was ruined. This attraction can be visited free of cost throughout the year. In the 15th century the first floor of the castle was modernized a bit.
