Mattersey Priory was a Gilbertine monastery turned into an English Heritage property located near Nottinghamshire which is situated close to some featured Nottingham accommodations. The partial remains of the monastery have made it a famous attraction. Mattersey is one of the several Gilbertine monastic site. The remains of the Gilbertines include a priory kitchen, a 15th century tower and a 13th century refectory. It was founded in 1185 in order to support six Gilbertine canons. In 1279 it got damaged by a fire and since then the priory buildings were never rebuilt again. Most of the Gilbertine monastic houses are supported by nuns and monks, however, no one can ever give an evidence which suggests that Mattersey was a double house.
